Ali Ollie Woodson
Right Here All Along
(Ollywood Records/Expansion)

It's always good to see and hear experienced, "older" singer back in the business. Ali Ollie worked with the Drifters (from 1972 till 1977), then replaced Teddy Pendergrass as lead singer for Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes till 1979. In 1983 he joined The Temptations and stayed with them until 1987. And now, in 2001 we get his debut solo album, although I'm not sure that it's "long awaited" like the sticker on the CD says. Anyway, thanks to the guys at Expansion who made Right Here All Along.
What do we get from Mr. Woodson on his first album? Like on most Expansion albums, a blend of timeless soul music that fits perfectly to Ollie's deep voice. Ok, it's nothing you haven't heard before, but it's done with conviction and simply straight soul; and on the other hand do we really want something earth-shattering? I guess most soulfans are quite happy with good songs, fine production and a great voice and if it's offered by someone not everyone knows, that's even better. That's exactly what's here on offer, although some songs like Power Of A Woman or Love's Not All have a slight 80ies feeling, that I could have done without. But songs like Turn Out The Stars, Angel, Never Give Up or the excellent cover of Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow should not be missed by any die-hard soul fan.
