Victor Davies
(Afro Gigolo/JCR)
Victor first came to my notice with Brother as 12" release on Flipside. Better Place and Lady Luck followed as 12"es on his own Afro Gigolo label and somewhere inbetween he also released Runaway Train on the Sampler Du Monde on People. The good news for all the people, who missed these releases simply because they were vinyl-only and on small labels, is that all these songs are available on Victor's debut. And because it's on his own label he don't have to please any A&R people and don't have to record inferior songs. Those who know some of his early material won't be disappointed with his more accoustic, hand-made music. Victor plays guitar, piano and percussion on this album and is supported by a certain Sam Cooke (this name reminds me of someone else...will there ever be a change coming?) on Sax and Flute, Jake Hirsch on Rhodes and Nathain Haines on flutes (on Sound Of The Samba).
It's hard to pick out highlights that stands above the rest because all eleven songs are worth listening. Personal favourites include Sound Of The Samba with it's slight brazilian samba rythm, Lady Luck (loved this one since the first listen to the 12"), Better Place and Blues For You.
Another good news is that Victor's debut is licensed to JCR in Germany so it will be more widely available than only via Victor's website www.afrogigolo.co.uk.
