Remixes
(JCR)
It can be interesting to hear what a remixer can do to a song and possibly he or she can change the whole meaning and direction of a song. So the concept of doing a remix album of your work can be a good idea if you got the right people to remix your songs or it could be a total miss that will spoil everything if you chosse the wrong remixers.
And on the other hand Victor Davies debut album was such a good one that it's quite clear that the original songs can't be improved but of course new meanings could be added.
With previous released remixes of e.g. The Sound Of The Samba by the Masters At Work (also included here) we didn't have to be afraid that Remixes would be a miss.
Although there are only 6 songs on offer, namely Spirit, Sound Of The Samba, Runaway Train, Lady Luck, Blues For You and Better Place this album doesn't sound boring or repetitive.
With remixes by Tony Colman & Tim Land (Spirit), MAW, Wahoo (Runaway Train), Marc Rae (Blues For You), Da Lata (Sound Of The Samba), Leme (Runaway Train), Only Child (Lady Luck) or Nuspirit Helsinki (Runaway Train) there's enough variety to chose from.
My personal favourites are the epic Nuspirit Helsinki rework of Runaway Train with over 9 minutes with extra added percussion, flugelhorn and trumpet (they have done a really great job!) and of course the MAW remix of Sound Of The Samba. Equally appealing is the Da Lata Remix of this song. And not to forget Marc Rae remix of Blues For You or the Procreation Remix by Samuel Geiser of Lady Luck that reminds me slightly of some Osunlade remixes.
The rest fits nice to the aforementioned remixes but doesn't outdo them.
Remixes is a fine album but if you haven't already purchased the original album I would recommend that one first.
