The O'Jays
For The Love
(MCA)
Finally Eddie Levert, Sr. (father of Gerald Levert), Walter Williams and Eric Grant deliver another quality soulful album. Their Love You To Tears album from 1997 on Volcano Entertainment was ok but not very memorable.
But this time The O'Jays remember their strength they offered on albums like Back Stabbers, Ship Ahoy, Survival or Family Reunion. So we get a straight-ahead soul album full of great songs. Ok, the topics of the songs may have changed since their Gamble & Huff days on Philadelphia Records. No more social conscious lyrics but songs about love, lost love and so on.
The only song that doesn't fit into this album is the more cliché-ridden Latin Lover with it's spanish guitars (also in another version available as the bonus track here).
For The Love is one of their best works in a long time. Miss it at your own peril!
