N'Dambi
Tunin Up & Cosignin
(Cheeky-I)
Such a pity that N'Dambi's records are not widely available so far. Her debut Little Lost Girls Blues was (and still is) one of the best soul album of the last years (and it's even better than Erykah Badu's Baduizm).
This time N'Dambi offers a two CD set full of songs with a live feeling. Looks like everyone these days wants to release a 'live' album...we had Erykah, Maxwell and there's a new Jill Scott live album out soon...is that the new trend? Going back to the roots of handmade soulmusic? I would be the last one to argue with this!
Some of the songs on Tunin Up & Cosignin you may know from the aforementioned Little Lost Girl Blues like See U In My Dreams, Lonely Woman, Soul From The Abyss, The Sunshine (here with elements of Roy Ayers classic Everybody Loves The Sunshine), I Think 4 Sure (this time with a touch of Stevie's As) or Broke My Heart. With the live feeling you really get the impression that these are new songs you haven't heard before. But N'Dambi also has recorded some new songs like Ode To Nina, Bitter Bitter Blue, Crazy World or Black Star.
Summed up this is value for your money and another strong album out of Dallas, Texas. Not sure if this will win N'Dambi any new fans but anyone with a sense for real soul music will love it (and we all know there not so many people around with a more ecclectic taste in these times of casted R&B/Pop groups so that's another reason why N'Dambi's CDs are not available everywhere).
