Musiq
Juslisen
(Def Soul)

Now minus the second name Soulchild (we all get older, don't we?) but still with a title that suggests bad spelling. His debut album Aijuswannaseing from 2000 introduced Musiq as an also run in the nu soul arena. But with Juslisen it looks like things will be changing since it made it straight to the top position of Billboard's R&B album charts in the first week and Musiq is now ready for mass-consumption. So that may be the reason I have had a little trouble with Juslisen to put my thought into the right words. Juslisen is no bad album but it's doesn't cross the border between a good and a really great album. We do get some fine songs like Babygirl, Time, Previouscats, the very soulful string-laden ballad Dontchange or in my opinion the best song here Motherfather (Musiq's musical thank you to his parents). The rest are nice modern nu soul influenced songs but after having listened to Juslisen for some time now, I'm not really remembering a song by heart. Or maybe it's just because this album has 17 full songs on offer (plus 2 interludes) which makes this just too much of the same...sometimes less could be more.
So if you're a little short on cash at the moment you'd better invest your money in the Angela Johnson, Ola Onabule and Terry Callier album.
