Kenny Lattimore
Weekend
(Arista)
Judging from the first singel Weekend this would've promised to be a great album, but, alas, as much as I liked Kenny for the strength of his two albums for Columbis/Sony (like Never Too Busy, Climb The Mountain, Tomorrow or Days Like This) I have to admit that I may not have bought this album instantly if he was a newcomer. For my liking this first album for Arista features to much of what's supposed to sell right now, i.e. R&B in the modern sense which means blackpop like Destiny's Child et. al.
There's no denying Kenny's vocal ability, but I would've preferred if he had developed more into the way the Masters At Work remixes for Days Like This or If I Should Lose My Woman were. But this sounds quite replaceable. Really standout cuts are the aforementioned Weekend and the last song Healing. Inbetween it sounds more like music by numbers with a loss of individuality. Even the ballads like The Things I'll Do or Who suffer from the poor surroundings. I don't think that this album will win Kenny any new fans in an already crowded marketplace of modern R&B that others do better. My advice?! Buy the new Gerald Levert, the new O'Jays or even the new Tony Terry or Babyface albums instead!
