Jerome Sydenham & Kerri Chandler
Saturday
(Ibadan)

Ibadan Recording (named after a Nigerian city) is the record label of Jerome Sydenham and Kerri Chandler. They first came to my attention with re-issues of Ten City songs (remixed by Kerri and/or Joe Claussell) and some other more leftfield productions done in the house/jazz/afro-style. The most famous record of Ibadan is the coverversion of Nina Simone's See Line Woman (that saw a release on UK's XL with different remixes), but the "original" Kerri Chandler remix is still the best. It features the original vocals by Nina and is also included on this CD! The other tracks were mostly available previously on 12" singles (like Aro, Ko Ko, Espirito Du Tempo). But for those who missed them or who like to have some of the best Ibadan songs on one unmixed CD, Saturday is the perfect solution. It contains more of the Afro-influenced House/Jazz songs (mostly instrumental with a lot of percussion, some horns, flutes etc.) this label is known for. The spirit of Fela Kuti and other Afrobeat artists still lives on today in a more modern context like records from Masters At Work, Blaze, Dennis Ferrer and Kerri Chandler & Jerome Sydenham have shown. Miss it at your own peril!
