Glenn Lewis
World Outside My Window
(Epic)
Glenn Lewis first caught my attention on the Red Star Sounds Vol. I Soul Searching compilation from 2001 that features his song Don't You Forget It. And what first struck me and certainly many others was his voice. I had to read the booklet once again to make sure I wasn't listening to Stevie Wonder because Glenn sounds so much like Steveland on Don't You Forget It (which makes the second Stevie clone in a long while together with Donnie).
His first album World Outside My Window is finally with us and like one may have expected he still sounds like Stevie on most of the songs (and that's no bad thing, really!).
Although all songs are good and beautiful only the afore-metioned Don't You Forget It capture you at an instant (which means it's catchy and the song remains in your brain for some time). But that's really no bad thing either, quite on the contrary, Glenn delves more into the music than an average producer designed act would. So it's no wonder he co-wrote most of the songs (together with Andre Harris and Vidal Davis who also take care of the production). And what we get is story telling soul music like in the heydays of the 70ies (and again it really doesn't hurt that his voice sounds like one of the legends of that era)...just listen to Take Me or It's Not Fair. The atmosphere and songs on World Outside My Window reminds me in some way of Spirit Tales, the vastly overlooked album by Stephen Simmonds, that had also a more sad and lonely approach. So don't you make the same mistake like with Mr. Simmonds and miss this album!
Glenn Lewis is really an artist to watch out for, though it may be hard to top this superb debut album.
