Gerald Levert
Gerald's World
(Elektra)
Some people can really do no wrong like Gerald Levert. He just gets better with time!
Gerald became famous with his Brothers as Levert (remember Cassanova?) and later went solo with Private Line (that also features Baby hold on to me, a duet with his father Eddie Levert, Sr. from the O'Jays). Three more solo albums followed (Groove on, Love & Consequences and G) and an album of duets with his father, where you really heard how equal their voices can sound and you have difficulties to tell them apart. With each album we get a closer look on Geralds search for love, his hopes, failures and disappointment (like Love Street - "Welcome to this lonely man's life/ Every time I try to love/ It just don't seem/ To come out right/ And it seems kinda funny/ 'Cause I always give my all/ One minute I'm on top of the world/ And the next I seem to fall/ I wanna be loved and give love/ Wanna make other people mad/ Nothing or no one can break us up/ We would be something they wish they had" - , What About Me - "We laid up in the bed remember the things we said/ we'd be together until we're dead/ you let your friends get into your head/ it's never too late to turn things around/ you said love was true and you'd always be down" - or Heart Don't - "Heart Don't tell me I'm wrong again/ Cause that would be whack/ And I Don't want to be that/ Heart Don't tell me I'm wrong again/ Cause it wouldn't be fun/ I think I've found the right one yeah/ Not another gold digger/ It's just my luck, go figure/ The good ones always pass me by/ They always go to the next guy/ Or I always get the one/ Everybody else has done/ Give her everything, I keep her lace/ I must have sucker on my face")
These heartfelt lyrics and music continue with Gerald's World. Like his inbetween album song A Dream With No Love for the Spike Lee movie "Bamboozled" (also featured on this album) has shown, he still yearns for someone "to fill his emptiness". And that's what makes Gerald's album worth listening to (of course except for some great songs), Just like the late Marvin on Here My Dear used his troubles and doubts as inspiration and poured out his thoughts in his music.
If you're not already have all albums by Gerald, what you're waiting for? Get them all, from the man who put the Blues back into R&B.
