The Fuzz Band
Without Boundaries
(CD Peach Fuzz)

The good thing about having a website that deals with music is, that sometimes artists or their management contact you and send you their music for a review. And usually this is always a very pleasant surprise. Without Boundaries by The Fuzz Band is no exception and is further proof of what seems to become more obvious with every strong independent release like this one, Mia Miata or Monica Dillon, i.e. that the only thing a major label may be good for, is to offer world-wide distribution but certainly not developing and nurturing new artists.
The Fuzz Band is a nine-member group from Virginia, USA. And like other bands reviewed on this site recently, e.g. Groove Stu or Oktbrwrld, the Fuzzband offers a sound that has a pleasant live-feeling to it. They fuse soul, funk, jazz, hip-hop, R&B and even classical music into an ecclectic blend, that evokes memories of soul/funk music's halcyon days with bands with a plethora of members.
Besides talented musicians who knows how to compose and play a song, the Fuzz Band also impresses with three fine vocalists: Nakia Madry, K'Bana Blaq and Michon David.
Without Boundaries starts and ends with very good instrumental jazz-funk songs, Catalyst and Notmah. The second track is the funky Hey, a great song to start a party or a live performance since it's full of energy and has a nice brass section.
Time is an equally appealing song with a great funky groove, sung by K'Bana Blaq.
There's really not a dull song on this album and you could leave it in your CD player for hours without getting bored because the music sounds like the Fuzz Band's playing live to you.
Nevertheless, I like to point out some songs to you.
There's the wonderful Surreal, this is really a great soul song with splendid interwoven vocals and nice instrumentation.
Crossroads is an excellent song about decisions and which way may be the right one, the safe road or the other, a topic that reminds me of the poem The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost.
Love is a ballad about the universal topic of, er, love...and it's a classic seductive soul song.
Cinimin is an interesting song that starts like you're in a language lab trying to pronounce Cinimin and then turns into a great piece of jazz-funk in the best Tom Browne style à la Funkin' For Jamaica or Ghetto Horn.
And there's still more, like the funky Who or the hip-hop beat influenced Uh Oh that makes this album really worthwhile.
Without Boundaries is a great album that will shut up all the people who always say, they don't make records like they did these days. Here you get your developed, refreshed, rearranged and reinvented funk and soul from a unique band.
