Electric Soul
(CD Electric Chair / PIAS / Groove Attack)
Electric Chair is a Mancunian label, so it's no surprise that we get some of Manchester's best musicians on this compilation together with other good music in the leftfield soul/jazz-not-jazz area. Mixed by the Unabombers (Luke Cowdrey & Justin Crawford) and inspired by their irregularly held Electric Soul parties, this compilation offers some fine modern soul moments for the more open-minded music lovers.
Take Eye To Eye for example, a song by veteran musician Amp Fiddler (you may remember his 1990 Elektra album With Respect and the single So You Wanna Be A Gangsta under the moniker Mr. Fiddler). Eye To Eye is a fine soulful downtempo song that shows why Amp Fiddler is so much in demand these days. He's also featured on Only Child's U Bring Me Vibes, a great midtempo soul-funk track.
Peven Everett's Testin' Me has already been praised for the review of his own Studio Confessions album and it fits nicely into the spirit of the Electric Soul compilation.
And so does Jazzanova with Vikter Duplaix on vocals on Soon, that appears here in the A Touch Of Jazz Mix. But it still gets deeper with Osunlade and Nadirah Shakoor on the wonderful spiritual driven Touched My Soul.
West-London's Phil Asher makes a welcome appearance here under his nom de plume Focus. Having Your Fun is a nice soul-house cut that's featured in the extended version.
One of Manchester's best bands, Jersey Street, deliver Burnin, a disco-influenced groove, that sounds nice but - alas - isn't one of their best songs.
James Mason's I Want Your Love is a funky disco song with some fierce percussion and a great song to end this nice mix by the Unabombers.
All in all Electric Chair is a very pleasant compilation that's perfect for the pre- or after party moments, altough it's even perfect for the party itself, if you don't need 130+ bpm to move you body.
