Dennis Taylor
In The Mood
(CD Dome Records)
I remember the (then) obscure US white label with Enough Is Enough on it and before you could say, that's a great track, the singer was signed to Dome Records in the UK and a full album (also called Enough Is Enough) followed in 2000. One year later Dennis Taylor came up with his second album Unconditional.
And since Dome is a label that's really interested in developing its artists we now have Dennis Taylor's third album, In The Mood.
Dennis teams up with Darryl James and Fred McFarlane again and the result is another strong soul album that's really soul in the traditional sense of the word with memorable songs. And like its predecessor it doesn't try to follow what's hip at the moment.
Take the great midtempo song At The Place for example, that's spiced up by Sherman Irby on sax and Wincey Terry on background vocals. Certainly a song that you can still play in five or ten years and it will sound good.
Wincey Terri sings background vocals on almost every track here and is even featured on lead vocals on the cover of Sam Dees Am I Dreaming ?, a very good version of this ballad, that has been a R&B hit for Atlantic Starr before.
Another fine ballad is Don't Wanna Give Up, this time the background vocals are sung by Brook Richardson, who also co-wrote the song with Darryl James and Fred McFarlane.
There are more great song like the title track, In The Mood, the excellent Now That I Found You or Want, another solid midtempo song, written by Rashaan Patterson, Jamey Jaz and Martika Merrero.
Actually, there isn't a dull song on this album, so if you like your music soulful and sung by a deep, rich and recognizable male vocalist, then make sure you get In The Mood and Dennis Taylor's first two albums (if you don't own them already).
