Cooly's Hot Box
Take It
(Purpose/Dome)
Another great record from UK label Dome Records after Beverlei Brown, Dennis Taylor or Hil St. Soul. You might know Cooly's Hot Box from various releases for Sole Records, another nice British label that releases music on the more soulful side of house. The singer Angela Johnson and John Christian Urich has also been featured on various housetrax, like Guiro with Angela for FF To The Money Shot (on Sole) or Tortured Soul with Christian for I Might Do Something Wrong (on Central Park). But together with Ernesto Abreu and Victor Axelrod they offer more than just housemusic. What we get is a quality soulalbum, in fact Make Me Happy or the more uptempo song Friend Of Mine are reminiscent of D-Influence at their best. Funny, but Take It with it's relaxed beats and background vocal arrangement reminds me in some way on songs from the Terry Ellis album Foster/McElroy did some years ago. It's alright or Simple would fit perfect on any Nu Soul album by the likes of Erykah or N'Dambi. Throw in some funk like on Take Me Home Tonight, and some latin influences (Dimelo Siempre) and you get an album that graces every serious record collection!
