Mission De Luxe
(ParaSol)
Now that's quite an interesting record. Like the Llorca record New Comer this is a frenchman who offers a lot of variety in music which means jazz, house and soul. And with the inclusion of Mandel Turner on vocal duties he even uses the same singer like Llorca.
Mission De Luxe starts dramatically with a violin intro, then turns in some relaxed late night house with Green Square (love the saxophone on this track).
Life features Electra Weston on vocals and is a fine soul song with some sad lyrics (They say 'How are you dealin' with all these problems?/ Looks like all the children have gone astray.'/ Lack of education, role models or guidance/ To help them through this crazy world today/ Papa left me and mama last night/ It's not the first time he has strayed away/ Without no job how can he feel like a man/ He's leavin' cause he don't help us no way). The Flute Plays On freatures of course some flute but has another more sad feeling to it.
IC Le Funk is damn jazzy with saxophone, double bass and finger snips. Charles Is Back features some fine scatting by Guy Leclerc-Chalvet and equally excellent vibes by Lucas Gerbet.
Let The Music is one of the songs that features the great vocals of Mandel Turner and this song wouldn't be out of place on a Naked Music release if they were as soulful as they used to be. Like Llorca with My Precious Thing I'm really astonished what quality house music some french producers and singers can offer. On Light Of The Sun Mandel Turner teams up with the afore-mentioned Elektra Weston and we get another winner.
Also worth mentioning is Meraklon with it's acoustic guitar or the more lounge-like Sway that closes the album.
So, don't be put off by the rather meaningless cover and take a trip into modern french music away from some overdone filtered house tracks.
