Bobby & Steve
Past, Present & Future (A 20th Anniversary)
(2xCD SuSu Records)
Hard to believe that house music twins Bobby & Steve are spinning records for over 20 years now. They started at Simpsons wine bar in Forest Gate, East London, in 1984 after telling the manager that he needed a DJ for his bar. With their Zoo Experience show on Kiss they really came to fame. Their Garage City and Soul Heaven nights followed soon and the rest is like they say history.
"We started way back in 1984, with this just being our hobby", say Bobby & Steve, "It's been great being able to climb up that ladder of success, and not taking too many knock-backs. You could say we've been lucky but we've worked damn hard for everything that we've got. Keeping it real and showing respect have brought us this far, and it will take us even further. We love our jobs, and still get excited twenty years down the line."
Nowadays Bobby & Steve are not only DJs but also label owners of Zoo Groove Stereo that so far has seen releases by the likes of Barbara Tucker, Brian Chambers or Overjoyed.
To celebrate Bobby's & Steve's twentieth anniversary as house music force SuSu Records will release the double album Past, Present & Future (A 20th Anniversary) on July 26th, 2004.
Spread across two CDs we get the best of, er, the past, the present and the future (thus the title) of soulful classic disco and house music.
The Disco Mix kicks off with Teddy Pendergrass' The More I Get, The More I Want. And more we get with a lot of other classics like Fat Larry's Band's Looking For Love, Diana Ross' The Boss or the late Phylis Hyman with You Know How To Love Me. To list all 13 songs that are mixed here by Bobby & Steve would be mere name-dropping so please have a look below at the track listing.
The same goes for the house mix CD that has some of house music icon's to offer like Ten City, Barbara Tucker, Lenny Fontana, Blaze, Masters At Work or Kim English. And listening to songs like Bobby's & Steve's own Deeper In Love or Cerrone ft. Jocelyn Brown with Hooked On You after you have listened to the Disco Mix it's obvious that house music has become something like the new disco and draws much inspiration from disco's classic period more than it used to in the early times of Traxx, DJ International or Emotive Records.
Past, Present & Future is a pleasant and very danceable compilation and perfect if you either want to warm up before going out or if you want to save the money for a DJ at your private party. And if you wish you can also have the real thing, i.e. seeing Bobby & Steve live because they will tour in conjunction with the album release. For tour dates visit zoogroovestereo.com.
