Bah Samba
There are a few key happenings that brought about the creation of BahSamba and many turns that led them to their current shape. Essentially BahSamba was formed from the ashes of Batu which also gave birth to Smoke City in the form of Chris Franks and Da Lata as Batu was managed by Patrick Forge.
In the early to mid 90s Julian Bendall was working with Grease Park on various productions ('Back To Love' Brand New Heavies, 'Share My Life' Inner City, 'Anywhere' Dub Star) that were recorded at the Network studios with Nic Britton and Lee Fredericks on engineering duties, the pair later set up their own studios (Midi Rooms). It was at this time that Julian was being influenced by the dance scene that Graeme was very much a part of and the sonic style of Nic and Lee. Later that year Julian moved to Brighton and joined local band Urubu (formally Batu) of which BahSamba where members.
In early 1996 Julian Bendall, Kevin Alexanda and Geoff Holroyd (the surnames of which make up the Bah) formed a loose group of naturally talented musicians to play live and maybe record a few songs whilst experimenting with the fusion of traditional musicianship, dance and modern recording techniques at Midi. The result becoming the early BahSamba sound in the shape of 'Carnival' their debut single that was released on Loaded later the same year and saw the first fruits of the relationship with restless soul making this track perfect for the Notting Hill Carnival, with its combination of pure Brazilian atmosphere with Ladbroke Grove attitude.
At this time the voice of a very young Alice Russell was heard floating over the garden wall and contact was made by knocking on the door to borrow a casserole dish. Alice's voice fitted perfectly with the direction that BahSamba was taking and was first realised with 'Reach Inside' in early Spring of 1997. Featured on the Dimitri from Paris mix album in 2000 and named as his favourite band, it shows the longevity of the bands sound in an ever increasingly disposable scene. It wasn't long before they produced 'So Tired Of Waiting' and then 'Black Blood' which was a farewell recording to Bebeto De Souza who was returning to his native Brazil to live but played with the band on their six month Brazilian tour straight after the recording. On return from the tour there was a certain amount of regrouping to be done as a mini tour of Japan had proceeded the Brazil tour and there were many changes in the original line up with Geoff leaving for London and the lure of another band (Golden) and Kevin to concentrate on writing. Tristan Banks joined to takeover drums and percussion from Geoff, and immediately flexed his muscle with Shinjuku Blues an EP of original and live drum madness and session, live work with LTJ Bukem and Da Lata and Luis Taylor on his CV.
In the summer of 2000 All I Ever Wanted was released but not before it was performed at the first London gig (Soulsonic at Subterainier). With five 12" released BahSamba are embarking on their first Album. After being described as 'a band to watch' by the Sunday Times this album will reflect the influences of the last four years, from Tristan's live work to Julian's dance experience with restless soul et al and Ed Myer's (bass) current work with Turin Brakes, but not forgetting Alice's hip hop and soul flavours along with the rest of the (12) band members who play out weekly as they have done since day one, which is the engine of the band and the bond that makes it work.
